Surat’s rich and popular traditions come alive during the times of celebration in the city. The Kite Flying Festival is a renowned example of the new-age twist. Originating in Ahmedabad in 1989, Surat took to this festival with great enthusiasm, welcoming everyone of every background and age to join in on flying the decorative kites, with highly distinctive differences between the creative, artistic connoisseurs. For more of an old-fashioned celebration, the customs of the city are put on display during Dang Durbar, one of the most major events to occur here. Locals dress up in their traditional, formal clothing and dances are performed in the heart of the city. Adding to this hearty excitement are the stalls that are set up all over the surrounding areas of the Dang Durbar activities. During the event, artisans bring their products to sell from all over the city – a great time to pick up a traditional souvenir at excellent cost. Surat’s spirit truly shines through during these festive occasions. It is also home to many business and cultural events, exhibiting devotion and pride in their city.
